Final Reflection

"Using your experiences on this project and relating your programmes to other webisodes you have researched, discuss how taking account of the online audience affects the process of showing creative work"

Our project is called show project, for it I would make and distribute a micro-series online - webisode. Micro-series on television and radio have a lot of disadvantages, while online distribution has a lot of advantages, for example; publishing work online give anyone with an internet instant access to the material, this gives the video an instant audience. Without the internet publishing videos as a student with such a wide audience for free would have been next to impossible. Other media types such as photography have been given the same treatment, you can upload photos sites such as Flickr for a more artistic pictures while other websites for social networking such as Facebook give you a chance to share pciture of yourself, friends and social events such as gigs or parties. For videos you can upload it to public broadcasting websites like youtube or vimeo. With these sites anybody can publish their work as long as they have access to the internet and a video camera. This is why the internet has changed the world.

I mentioned Facebook earlier, this website was our main outlet for information around my webisodes, such as details on shoots, character updates when and where my episodes were being punlished, but the main purpose was a fan site. I chose Facebook over other websites such as Myspace because Facebook is more commonly used by a wider range of people from all ages to race, there aren't many people I know who don't have facebook, even my Grandma and Granddad use it. I said ealier about uploading photos to Facebook, you can also upload Videos which Facebook users can then comment on. These comments were important to us as I could take on board the viewers feedback, both positive and negative, I could then make changes to the episodes on how the viewers felt.

Facebook is also home to other webseries such as 'Living with the Infidels' or 'The guild'. The Guild unlike our webseries has been going for alot longer, a much wider fan base and in my opinion a much better weseries. They have even managed to get promotional finance from Microsoft due to growth in technoligies you can now download and view films and videos from Xbox live for the Xbox 360 such as The Guild. This asks the question; Why has The Guild stuck with Facebook and not branched out further? Facebook is much more personal than a website, users can comment on the The Guilds page, on photos and videos and you are more likely to stumble upon a facebook page rather than a website. While a website a user may not feel they are going to get heard.

Due to the project being a student project, there were things I could and couldn't do due to working to a client (our teacher). Such as length and having the class logo after the video, but other rules came later; after I finished my first episode I realised there was a lot of swearing, due to this the teacher decided there were to be no swearing so I could show my work to other students and teaching officials, this included other offensive material for example gore or sexual references. Due to this I had to bleep out swearing before the first episode was uploaded, this was immediately picked upon by my audience and myself and both thought it sounded ridiculous for this reason I decided to cut out any form of swearing as I didn't want to use bleeps, this turned out well and the audience responded well.

The audience also helped me in my work for the opening credits, I wanted to make something creative and up to date, I used whip cuts and music from current artists, one being The Avalanches. I also tried to create a title logo which involved current media, for exmaple graffiti, but then I wanted to go for a more professional look this is why I decided to research other episodes and their titles.

Question and Answer time with the Producer

are you happy with the 3 episodes of the webseries we made for you?

I am happy with the improved quality through the 3 series but i am very dissapointed by the lack of keeping to deadlines. this would have caused a number of serious issues were this a commercial brief. the episodes were too long as well. the third episode was the right length.

after interviewing members of the audeince, they said that they liked the second episodes length which was 4.30. they said that episode 3 was too short. what are your thoughts on that?

i'm glad that the audience responded well to the length but i still believe that it could have been shorter. on television there's a specific slot for a series. if the slot was 30minutes, the episode couldn't have been any longer. i suppose online it's different because you don't have the specific time gaps.

do you like the idea of the series, the fact that it's in a detention room?

i think the concept is very strong and i have been very excited by the idea from the beginning. i feel the first episode did not do justice to the concept but the last episode has a much stronger appeal.

what didn't you like about the series?

the bad language and needless aggression in the first episode. i liked the fact that you changed the offensive language into more inventive expressions of rage for the other episodes.

what did you like about the series?

The title sequence is very good, both in terms of genre conventions and technical ability. the whip cutting was very effective. i enjoyed the more surreal elements of the third episode as well.

what did you think of the characters, and the acting?

i thought matt hornby's performance and character consistently amusing. the other acting improved over time.

we missed deadlines and the lengths of the episodes you werent happy with either, but what could we have done better?

communicated better and looked out for each other more to ensure everything was completed to time and to a high enough standard.

if we made a fourth episode, what would you like us to include, and how would you like us to go about it?

continue in the slightly surreal, mighty-boosh like direction you have begun to take.

INTERVIEWER: What are you initial thoughts and feelings of the micro-series?

It was comedy, and it was one of those things that you could watch again because its not bad bad, but its kind of bad good. Like, it knows it's bad, but it makes it good. Like with the editing and stuff.

They developed, the characters, as it went on. I thought the second episode was better than the first, and the 3rd one. There was a lot more comedy and action to it.

I think the girl should have been in it more because she was just there and she didn't really do anything.

I think the first one focused more on the development of the characters. Just introducing them separately. Then the second one had a story base, and then the third one is just kind of random. It was just trippy and 'getting high' for no apparant reason until the end.

INTERVIEWER: What do you think of the characters and their interactions?

Josh's character (Chris) It might have been the shot type, but it just felt like he had been pasted in there.

INTERVIEWER: The idea was that the characters in each episode didn't really notice he was there because he was kind of in the back of the room.

I really liked Keith's character. But I didn't really like the girls character, but thats because she didn't really do much. But my favourite character is keith, and I liked Sonny, and Pier. They're probably joint second.

You had a good range of characters, and they weren't the same or anything which was good.
And they were really different which was good.

INTERVIEWER: Do you prefer the first, second or third episode and why?

The second one, because it didn't have all the hassle of the first one and the third one was just a bit confusing.

INTERVIEWER: Do you think it worked though?

I think the effect was to confuse the audience which worked, but it was just a bit weird and random. In terms of story-line.

INTERVIEWER: So did you prefer the second one?

I did prefer the second one but I got what was happening in the third one.

I prefered the second one. I though the first episode was too long and the thrid one was too short.

INTERVIEWER: Was the episode structure for the second and third episodes better than the first?

It flowed better than the first one.

INTERVIEWER: What do you think of the fan page on Facebook?

I havent seen a lot of it so far but from what I've seen i think it's good. I like the idea of posting things from the characters perspectives.

Yes, it gives you more of an insight into the characters.

I like the fan page, it's quite simple, but effective. It does keep it interesting, like you said about the characters posting things. It keeps the background story going for the web-series.

INTERVIEWER: The target audience was people our age. 16-21. Do you think Facebook is a good place for a fan page?

Yeah, definitely.

INTERVIEWER: Do you all have facebook?

(All four) Yes

INTERVIEWER: What do you think could be improved for the next episode if we made one?

Development of the second episode.I think you should cut out the swearing because it's just like a beep a minute. I know it was just in the first one but it was just like beep after beep after beep.

I'd quite like the same setting as the second one, but with a different story-line and different characters.Maybe have one or two main characters, and then rotate the other characters around. So you get to see the old characters, like the audience favourites, but then you get to see their new reactions with the new characters.

INTERVIEWER: What are the good and bad points of the episodes? Let's start with the first one...

It was too long, and too much swearing. The good points were that it managed to establish a good base for the episodes to start on, and it wasn't too tiresome that you couldn't watch it again.I think the first one introduced the characters well. There was too much swearing though, it was just beep, beep, beep.

I think you focus the humour too much on Keith going crazy at the beginning. Apart from the Frijj bit which was really funny. Good word play, but I found that there were the two funny bits, you need to stretch the comedy out. I found myself waiting the whole episode for the Frijj joke. There should be more.

INTERVIEWER: What about the second one?

I really liked the second one. It was funny and it had a good story.

I liked it too, and throughout all three of the episodes, the characters managed to stay the same which was good. Sometimes in television series the characters change. They're nice one time and then they're really horrible the next but your characters didn't change.

The only bad point was when you looked at the camera and when the teacher was at the door. But every time I see that it makes me laugh anyway.

INTERVIEWER: What about the third one then?

It was too short, I got the idea you were trying to create an element of confusion but it kind of gave it away a bit with the title so maybe something a little bit more criptic could have worked better.

I didn't like the teachers acting. She was smiling too much about the fact that theres been a gas leak.

INTERVIEWER: Who is your favourite character?

I'd have to say Sonny, your character. it just made me laugh the way he kept hitting people. It was just one of those things I, personally, found hilarious.

I just really liked your reactions.I liked Keith.I liked the one who kept trying to escape, Pier.

INTERVIEWER: Did you think the acting was good?

I think the acting was good for all the characters.

INTERVIEWER: What did you think of vince as a character?

It felt as if he was just stuck on there to fill screen time because he kind of just sat there and said something every now and then.I think he's one of those characters that doesn't really do or say much but hes a part of it. And makes the whole thing whole.

INTERVIEWER: What makes the micro-series watchable?

Humour, slapstick humour. Nonsense really. Silly stuff.The comedic stuff. The way it was random, but good random.

It was just really funny.

Group Self-appraisal

As a group I felt we all did well working together, we all knew our roles and all entered into the show project with creativity though there were breakdowns in communication and organisation. We missed the deadline for Episode 1 and 3. This was mostly due to shoot locations being double booked etc. One of our shoots was also disrupted due to a class meeting. The final episode was previewed on vimeo on the airing date and on the next day we aired the finished episode.

Much of the time there was only one person exporting videos, as lesson would have finished one person would volunteer to do it. This wasn't the best way to approach the situation as we should have been more organised and been exporting before the end of the lesson. I was not part of the editing team but on one occassion I offered to sit with Hayden who was exporting till he finished but he said he was fine.

Before the current group, when it was a class project, I don't believe we would have succesfully and enjoyably made 3 webisodes. By being split up in to two we gained one thing; competition. I believe this was and is the main reason we held together as a group as we were determined to do better than the other team, though we went about it the wrong way, for example we wanted to make a better webisode rather than concentrate on the paperwork etc, which is what really counts. Towards the end we were doing better at paperwork, blogging and still managed to make some better webisodes.

Today I am going to interview some people and find out what they thought of the webseries, 'Detention Deficit'. I'm going to show them the fan page and show them each episode. Then I've arranged a series of questions to ask them to get some non-bias feedback.

Script Episode 3

script for episode 3 - gas leak


pier: why are you always getting at me? your always around me. where is the pen? vince! (pause) your always, like getting at me. i just cant stand it, the one time..

sonny: (interrupts) well think of a desent plan then and i'll stop getting at you.

pier: i just cant think of a plan, like, what the hell. (looks at keith)

sonny: you are such a vegetarian

shot of keith looking really 'out of it'. sonny and pier stare at him unable to figure out whats up with him. vince goes to see if he's okay.

vince: what seems to be the matter keith?

keith: i have eaten a rare amasoneon coffee bean. (sticks head up while talking and then continues looking around the room)

vince: aah, i see where you're going

shot of vince is from keiths perspective. everythings colourful and morphing.

sonny: what are you two talking about?

pier: yea, what are you two talking about?

vince and keith are talking in gibberish and sonny and pier can't make out what their saying.

sonny: am i missing something here?

pier and sonny look confused at eachother and then continue looking at vince and keith. damien walks through the door

damien: alright guys

keith: aah, cheif. (rubs face paint on his face to look like a red indian. the face paint magically appears with no explanation of why its there) get this spirit out of me

the next shot is of damien but he looks like cheif from 'one flew over the kookoos nest'

fade out

the next scene is where everyone is forming a vitual around keith. keith is lying on the table in the middle of the class chanting something. damien transorms into cheif again. pier is sitting on a table with sonny lying on him.

pier: sonny, do you remember the other day, when, when we were locked in the classroom and i tried to get out the door. and you.

sonny: i smashed your head, i smashed your head

pier: you smashed my head

sonny and pier laugh histerically

next scene everyone is dancing round keith like it's an actual ritual. all the characters have changed their appearance slightly. clothes torn and swapping clothes etc.

after a while a teacher walks in the door looking worried

teacher: oh my god, are you alright, i can't believe you're still alive.

everyone stops dancing and everyone looks normal again though their appearance is the same. basically, they look a mess.

teacher: there's been a massive gas leak

everyone collapses due to the gas they've been breathing in.

Episode 3

Episode Two Feedback - Negative

This is the more negative feedback for episode 2, some of which is constructive others being quite vindictive and bitter. This is due to the competition between our two groups.
This is the constructive Feedback:

The first negative feedback is the Trapped title too short. At the start of the episode after the opening credits it is silent, it was mentioned that it would be better if there was back ground sound or music. The sound quality was also still slightly poor.

There was a shot in which it was cut mid sentence and the close up of James face is also out of place. More variation in shots as most were Mid shots.

There was a lack of continuity in the change of rooms, this was due to a lack of free rooms in Long Road. The new character Chris was unexplained and Kieth, Haydens character looked like he was laughing in a shot, out of character, also Haydens shots didn't flow and Kieth is just annoying (even though this is in Negative feedback, I find this an accomplishment for the group, the actor (Hayden) and character choice, this is because the character description was - Annoying Caffiene Addict - so if the audience find Keith annoying then the character and actor was successful). We were also told that the acting is over confident, this again I don't fully understand as when acting you need to be confident or it wont look realistic, I can understand where they maybe coming from as in some places the acting doesn't need to be as exadurated as it is.

The episode was still too long even after cuts.

Episode Two Feedback - Positive

In todays lesson I watched our Webisode with the rest of the class and both gave feed back on our show. This is the more positive feedback. Our new character, Chris, was a hit and gave a bit of diversity to the characters. My character Vince was also a hit, some one even said he was 'Awesome' this goes hand in hand with another comment in which my acting was praised, another character Pier was also said to be much better in this episode. The teacher in the last shot was said to add to the comedic effect. Acting overall was better than episode one with a spectacular fake punch. The script and story line was funnier, well written and due to it being shorter was much better, there was much more interaction between characters and no swearing, so no annoying bleeps, instead the abusive terms were much more witty. The location and setting also improved as we managed to get hold of a proper class room, with one comment on the colours on the class room wall was better. Camera work, cinematography and editing were all much better, cuts were varied slow and fast. Fades and transitions also improved. Finally one comment says Much better than episode 1.

starts off with everyone sitting down at their desks, sonny starts talking to keith

sonny: keith. we’ve been sitting here for 15 minutes now. why haven’t you annoyed me yet?

keith: (looks frustrated with sonny) I'm pacing myself

sonny: so, you’re going to annoy me in a little while instead

keith: no. you ignoranus

sonny: (laughs)

vince and valerie start talking over sonny laughing

vince: what did you call him?

valerie: ignoranus, what the hell have you been smoking in your crack pipe.

sonny: crack (continues laughing)

pier: guys, i’ve nailed it. i have nailed it (bangs book on desk)

keith: sorry, but am i going completely mad? (raises voice)

valerie: going?

sonny: you’ve been a patient at the fucking luni-bin for a while mate

keith: can i just explain how im pacing my. fucking self

sonny: well, it happens

pier: what

sonny: he’s annoying me again

keith: fuck you guys

pause for a while

vince: enlighten me keith

keith: i’ve left my redbull outside the door. so i’m only allowed some every 30 minutes. it should help me sleep. hence, why i’m pacing myself.

everyone stares at him

vince: you didn’t enlighten me

chris: really. (everyone stares) how’s it working out for you. that’s a good idea. good little system. pacing yourself. i do the same for when i play guitar. i don’t want to overwork myself, you know.

everyone continues staring, silence

sonny: who. the. fuck. are you? (shocked face)

chris: i’m chris, pleased to meet you

valerie: why are you in detention then, did you kiss the teachers arse too much

pier: you do seem the type that would stay out, if i’m honest

chris: i chewed gum in class.

vince: i’ve seen things you wouldn’t believe

sonny: wrong moment vince

vince: sorry

pier: (speaking to chris) is that all

chris: yeh, nothing really bad. why you in detention then?

pier: if i told you, i’d have to kill you

keith and chris are sitting together

keith: thanks for thinking my idea was good by the way. these guys don’t appreciate me.

chris: that’s alright. actually. it’s half past now. you want me to go get your red bull from outside?

keith: (excited voice, slightly nagging) oh yes please. that’d be great. (laughs) if i didn’t have that. i’d probably los the plot. have an axiety attack or something.

chris: that’s okay, i’ll go get it

chris goes to open door, but it doesn’t open

chris: uh, guys. the door isn’t opening

keith: what! (loud, going out of control)

keith starts having an axiety attack, shaking his shoulders. sonny walks up to him and punches him in the face. he falls onto his chair.

sonny: i am not going through that shit again

valerie: the less of that the better

sonny: don’t talk to me

valerie: screw you sonny

chris: what the hell is wrong with you?

sonny: trust me, you’ll thank me later

vince: he is a crazy, moonstruck hound junkie. he needs to be controlled

pier: (talks to chris) did you say the doors locked?

chris: why else would hound junkie have gone fucking mental

sonny: you’re learning

pier: so, i’m trapped here? (looks worried)

chris: yes. we all are

sonny: that’s alright, pier will think of a plan

pier: (awkward laugh) yeh. sure. i’ll think of something

valerie: what. is your mind blank?

vince: what about your amazing idea earlier

pier: i’ll think of another one. that plan isn’t well suited for this type of escape

sonny: type of escape...(interrupts)

pier: stay the fuck out of this sonny. i’ll think of a plan. just give me a minute to gather my thoughts.

fade out.

fades in - 20 minutes later

chris: it’s been ages. a teacher hasn’t even come and checked up on us.

sonny: they don’t. teachers. they’re quite happy to just leave us here to rot. we’re trash to them. we’re the ones who fuck the system. and when your in here, your trash too.

chris: i’m not trash, i’m a good student.

valerie: no your not. you’re a fucking criminal.

vince: i don’t see what’s so special about rugby balls anyway. wilson this and wilson that. basket balls are better. i could have a good conversation with a basket ball

everyone looks over at vince

chris: what are you talking about?

vince: when we’ve been driven to madness. i wanna know who my best friend will be

chris: and you chose a basket ball?

vince: yeh

sonny: suppose they got a nice tan. just don’t impregnate it, might have loadsa golf balls rolling about.

vince: you don’t understand. you’re not ready for the truth

chris: i need to get out of here, any plan yet?

pier: i can’t think. i’m lost. i’m lost.( hangs his head in shame, crying)

sonny: every single fucking day, you think of a plan to escape. every. single, fucking day. are you telling me that the one day we need to a plan, you can’t think of one?

pier: i’m sorry (wails) i’m lost

sonny: you can do it, think

pier: i can’t

sonny: yes you can. ( stands up and grabs piers head) use your head!

rams piers head into the door

valerie: great. now what?

chris: we’re trapped

sonny: fuck sake, stand back, i’ll get the door open

sonny kicks the door really hard, nothing happens

chris: we’re screwed.

pier: (wakes back up) uh, what happened

sonny: call a doctor

pier: sonny, i’m fine, just got a fucking bad headache.

chris: not surprised ( murmurs)

Friendly Competition

Due to a recent teaser trailer form the opposing team, in which the words 'Detention Deficit Sucks' are written on a white board, I am in the process of coming back with a better and funnier teaser trailer. Me, Hayden, Alex and James are working on it while James and Laurence are uploading footage and editing.

Problem with Vimeo

I have found that when Episode 1 is watched on Vimeo via Facebook is does not count the video as being view, so therefore I will also upload a video to Youtube. I think this is a much better idea as more people go on Youtube rather than Vimeo.

Todays lesson relflection

Today I spent a good hour looking for a classroom which I could film in. I went to every block in the college and searched but every time I found one I'd get moved. After a stroke of luck I found a room which was free till 2.40 which was the end time I had the camera booked. Filming went extremely well, there were no arguments and everyone listened to other ideas. There were some problems, our actor for Valerie had to leave for the dentist at 2, so to get round this I filmed all her lines first so when she needed to leave she could. A second problem was the battery on the camera was low, so I just plugged it in, this did make filming slightly awkward as when I changed shots I'd have to move the plug to another socket.

As far as our acting went I feel the group all did very well, I had a new actor Josh Lucas who played our extra 'Chris'. He learned his lines very well and seemed to know what he was doing nor was he put off acting around the group.

I got back to lesson and uploaded the footage.

Today went well I started to learn my lines but felt the script was too long. Me and James spent the lesson taking out lines and adding in shorter ones, making sure the story and script all still made sense.

Overview of project

Like every project, there have been the negatives and the positives. In my case, being that the group get on well and all contribute with mostly helpful and creative ideas and suggestions.
Another part worked well was within the actual episode which was the title sequence and the credits, casting went well and spript writing is also generally alright.

But it is not all perfect as the group aren't that great at communication especially at the start, but we have tried to do better consisting of Facebook conversations and text messages. Bad timing for filming was also a problem due to lack of empty class rooms. Some people didn't remember the script well enough, some of the cast can only act on certain days. The swearing in the script was an issue and for the second episode its going to be scrapped.

During the project I have been an actor and have also created logos, titles and credit sequences. I have enjoyed my roles as I have not had too much pressure put on me and have been able to work creatively, especially with the title and the title sequence.

Laurence and James are now co-directors as this will keep a blanace. Laurence is also editing and then after he's edited the sequence, Hayden and Alex will return and tweek it, editing sound and adding effects. This would be much more efficient and Laurence would get more of it done if he worked on his own. The second episode will be much shorter, but the script is too long, so have attempted to cut out lines, but it will still be impossible to cut it down to 90seconds. I am going to attempt to do a quicker, funnier and more interesting Episode.

Script Episode 1

Detention deficit – Pilot episode script

Starts with pier looking bored leaning on his desk. He looks at the clock, the hand keeps on moving slower and slower. Even goes backwards. Sound of the clock out rules everything else. This is pier zoning out on the clock. Sounds comes back and you can hear Keith mumbling. This turns into Keith talking really quickly. Keith is talking to pier.

Keith: (talking really quickly, hard to make out what he’s saying)

Pier: (sighs)

Pier looks at sonny. Sonny understands what’s on Piers mind.

Sonny: he loco

Pier: (laughs)

Keith knows that he was being made fun of but he continues talking

Sonny: (interrupts Keith) you know what. Uh, Keith. (Pause) you need to talk more. I’m starting to forget you’re here.

Keith: (mocking what sonny has just said to him) “you know what”. You’re really, fucking rude. You need some manners. I’m talking about life. The world. Emotions. Feelings. All that shit. Stuff that brings people closer together. And you’re taking that away.

After keith has told sonny how he feels, sonny throws a pencil case at his face.

Sonny: you talk too much. (aggressive tone)

Keith looks really wound up. His eye starts twitching

Pier: you’ve set him off now. They’ll be no stopping him. You’ve unleashed the ultimate evil. Pandora’s Box. Has been opened.

Sonny: what are you saying? (Looks frustrated and slightly nervous) he does it all the fucking time. He drinks more coffee than the teachers.

Pier: I have a plan to escape, unharmed by the beast

Sonny: Keith

Pier: that one yea. Anyway, the plan is. we tie shoelaces together, until it’s long enough to use as a rope. And then we simply climb down out the window. I call it, ‘operation window lace’.

Sonny: wow pier, not too bad. Apart from the fact that we’re on the ground floor already. (Slaps pier round the back of the head) and what’s wrong with just walking through the door.

Just after sonny finished talking, a pencil case hits him in the face, Keith threw it at him

Sonny: crap!

Keith runs around making a mess of the room, running and moving really quickly. He’s gone insane.

Pier: same old shit. Different day

Fades out, then fades in with “15minutes later”

Keith is lying on the floor after a caffeine come down. The room is a dip.

Sonny: (walking over to keith to see how he is) he’s got to get off this, its turning him into a monster.

Sonny picks up a monster can next to Keith

Valerie walks over as well.

Valerie: look at the room, he’s trashed it. He’s a devil.

Valerie picks up a can of red devil from near keith

Sonny: he needs to kick this shit in.

Sonny picks up a big bottle of kick

Sonny: why are you talking to me (frustrated aggressive tone)

Valerie: don’t know. Everyone in this room is a freak anyway.

Pier walks past

Pier: aye aye aye

Sonny: well. Don’t talk to me

Valerie: (looks at camera) who’s that?

Sonny: I said don’t talk to me.

Valerie: who’s sitting under the table?

Vince: (long pause) hey

Vince get’s out from under the table. Gets out awkwardly, rustling tin foil and gear

Valerie: who are you?

Sonny: that’s Vince. Alright Vince? I haven’t seen you around for ages. You been under the table all this time? (sniggers)

Vince: yes (calm voice)

Sonny: bloody hell mate, I was only joking. What the fuck you playing at. Hiding under the table. Toddlers do that. You’re not a toddler.

Vince: I’ve been here, to prevent intrusion of my mind

Valerie: (looks surprised) okay

They all go to sit down

Sonny: (looks at time, only half an hour has passed) what. This is bullshit

Valerie: speaking of bullshit. What’s this I hear about you throwing a fridge at Damien?

Pier: I heard about that too (continues drawing his plans)

Sonny: there’s nothing much more to say. I threw a fridge at Damien. He annoyed me. Thought it was pretty funny.

Flashback scene where you find out it was a frijj milkshake

Valerie: what a load of shit. Why do you make up stuff as ridiculous as that. You’re an idiot sonny. A first degree idiot.

Sonny: shut up. It’s true.

Valerie: yeah, whatever.

Fades out, fades in

Valerie goes to sit next to Vince. Vince is drawing something in his book.

Valerie: hey vince. What you doing.

Vince: just some drawing. It’s a good way to pass time. And let my creativity spill out.

Valerie: (looking at his work) what is it?

Vince: (putting a lot of detail into picture. Looking concentrated) out of all the ones I’ve seen. This. Is my favourite crop circle.

Valerie: oh

Vince: it’s just so textured and the shape is so alien. It’s just amazing

Valerie: yea, amazing (sounds sarcastic)

Shows the page with a simple circle on the paper. Valerie goes to sit near sonny. Sonny is talking to pier

Sonny: you’ve been doing detention for ages now. Do you feel any different? Have you changed?

Valerie: are you rehabilitated?

Sonny: shut up, what does that mean anyway

Pier: rehabilitated? Well now, let me see. You know, I don’t have any idea what that means.
Sonny: it means have you..

Pier: I know what you think it means sonny. To me it’s just a made up word. A politicians word, so young fella’s like…

Sonny: stop quoting stuff pier. Dammit (frustrated)

They all go quiet for a moment

Sonny: could time possibly go any slower

Vince: the more you concentrate on the time, the slower it will go

Sonny: did you have to tell me that. Shit

Pier: aye aye aye. I can’t think of a better plan than window lace

Valerie: im bored. When can I go

Sonny: you can’t go until the teacher has dismissed us.

Vince: sometimes, he forgets.

Pier: no need to worry everyone. I’ve almost got a plan.

Sonny: I’m going to lose my mind in a minute

Vince: it will feel more like 3 minutes because you’re staring at the clock like that.

Valerie: could this get any worse

Facebook and Twitter Screen Shots 2

After a week and a half I have managed to gain a lot more friends and much more publicity. The Facebook page is looking slightly more professional and I have started doing status updates as if the characters are writing them themselves. As title designer and logo designer I have come up with a better profile picture. I plan to come up with a better non hand drawn title.

My Twitter hasn't been as successful, this is probably because not many people I know have twitter. I managed to link my Facebook statuses to twitter, so when I write on Facebook it comes up on Twitter.

Episode 1 Class Feedback

For my first Episode I had class feedback. The negatives out weighed the positives, but this is good as it gives us audience feedback which we can act upon and make a better episode next time. Firstly the feedback comes from both groups in the class, our group and the opposing. Until we have an audience feedback from outside of the class some of this feedback may be unjustified and slightly under rewarding or over rewarding.

My filming techniques are my best feedback, for example a good range of shots and establishing shots which are important as this gives the episode continuity. The opening sequence and sound track were also excellent, they gave the episode a lot of character.

The Characters were also commented upon, most of them being interesting and varied. The actors playing the characters also acted very well in most places. A scene which this was portrayed was the flashback and the milkshake throw.

Episode One - Detention Deficit Self Evaluation

Firstly my overall thoughts on the episode are I haven't produced an episode up to the standards I would have liked. I think the episode wasn't to the standard of my research and planning. This is not to say that I haven't done well or that there aren't snippets of funny or interesting shots. Also 6 minutes was way too long.

Firstly on a positive start I am very proud of the opening title, I have had a lot of positive feedback on the title. Many have said that it's a good title sequence, the music works well and is edited at a good standard.

The first scene doesn't go so well. The first shot of the clock is too long and slightly boring, it also doesn't make sense till half way through the scene so will be confusing for the audience. The room setting isn't appropriate, which school or college would hold Detention in a computer room?

The sound quality is also very poor at the start, getting better towards the middle, but still not to the standard it should be. Another annoyance is the beeping out of swear words, even though it is nescessary as our teachers changed the preferences on swearing. Because the beeping ruined our first episode I am going to cut out swearing as this will make the episode better, another point is that most successful comedies dont even have swearing in them and if they do need them they work cleverly around it.

There have been some comments on acting - over acting or not enthusiastic enough. This will hopefully be sorted out in the second episode when I manage to find a balance.

Todays lesson

This lesson was spent finishing the and putting together all material of episode one, including title and end sequence and finishing editing. Extra material was also being finished, for example the gag reel, I wanted to have this finish so I could upload it for after the episode is aired. The first episode had alot to be worked on. There were a lot of gaps and empty spaces, the swearing had not yet been censored and the beep sound needed clearing up. As great as our editors are I don't think they are used to editing comedy, this is not a slur on their part but a learning curve, this is something they will learn through this project. I met the deadline of 7.00pm as well.

As a group I am very proud of every ones work, we clubbed together and put the effort in to create a half descent show. I am very happy to go on to make a second episode as well.

Todays lesson plan

Today is the deadline for episode ones launch. Today will be spent finishing all material, editing and music needed. Today I will upload the episode to Vimeo for audience viewing.

Today.

Me and James went to finish filming the end credits, including a short section on my character Vince and the books of the characters. I also had Philippa take a picture of the main characters so I could end the titles. I have fully edited the opening title; it starts with a swing shot upwards with Sonny in frame about to throw a chair at the window, it then swings to Vince plant pot in hand and thesaurus on the head, then to Pier attempting to escape through the ceiling then realising the camera is on him he attempts to look innocent, the camera then skips to Valerie cigarette lighter lit, the final character is Kieth banging on tables and looking hyper. After Kieth there is a shot of a white board with Detention written and the names of the characters underneath with a tally of how many detentions they've attended, after this the characters school books are tossed into view showing there name. Finally a group picture fades into shot with the words Detention Deficit spin into view. The theme tune is Ending in ing. While I was doing this I gave Hayden the job of finishing the end titles.

The plan tomorrow is to complete any small changes or effects.

Wednesday 10th Lesson Plan

In todays lesson I will start the editing process for the opening titles. The footage was captured yesterday by Hayden and James.

Today didn't go so well in terms of time or getting much done. I had a meeting with a client for another project I am currently doing, this ended up taking up most of the lesson time. Me and Hayden managed to get the font and effects sorted out.

Todays lesson

In todays lesson I caught up on important paperwork and filing. I personally got together bits of design work for the title and ideas for credits etc. At first it was quite boring but, as our teacher quite rightly put it, no matter how well my Webisode comes out or how creative my ideas are, I wont get the mark I deserve if I don't have the supporting paperwork or blogwork. As a person who does not work well with paperwork or organisation and am more an idea and creative person I have decided that I will try my hardest to keep paperwork and blogwork up to date with lesson plans, lesson work and lesson reflection.

15th January - Lesson Plan

Today I am going to finish research on End Credits, so I can start to construct a storyboard over the weekend in preparation for editing the webisode.

Todays lesson.

In todays lesson I Filmed the first episode, minus a small amount of more footage I still need to get.

Even though I managed to get a lot of footage, things didn't flow too well. I arrived on time for the lesson, but the other members of my group had been filming before the lesson except they were moved from room to room even though they had booked a room and even double checked, they were still moved as a class needed the first room. After being given a room, I was constantly interrupted by a teacher who was quite rude. She seemed very annoyed that we were in there even though the teacher who teaches in that class room had let us use it. Her excuse was that she sends some of her pupils in there to do work. When we protested (with good reason, due to our previous misfortune in other class rooms and our permission to use this classroom) she wasn't really nice about the whole situation. She said that we were going to have to come to a compromise, which wasn't really a compromise at all, she said that we would have to leave the class room as her students needed to work. This doesn't sound like much of a compromise, so I stayed and let her students work on some of the computers as long as they worked quietly and wouldn't get in the way of the shots. This finally worked out fine for all students and I began to carry on working and coexisting peacefully in the same room, until the teacher would continually rudely bust into the room and talk to the students and was not thoughtful of if I was filming. This happened many a time so I had to re-shoot the scene I was half way through.

There were also disputes within the group about shots and scenes. These arguments were soon resolved when James, as annoying as it was, quite rightly said he was directing and his word is final but still encouraged creative input from all the group. I tried not to get involved as felt it would just further our delay.

Even though we were very unlucky in some of todays events I felt we worked well and the filming went well, or as best as possible due to our situation. I feel that we all did our best, and am very proud of the footage we got.

Thursday 14th Lesson Plan

Todays plan is to get to college early so I can start to film Detention Deficit. I should aim to get there for 12. Filming will carry on all through my double lesson. If by miracle I manage to finish early I plan to get the footage safely on to a computer, I doubt I will have time to start to edit and will be best saved for another day.

Wednesday 13th Lesson

In todays lesson I spent most of my time on costume research, how all the characters should dress or in some cases finding famous people, actors, musicians who the characters may dress like. I feel I did quite well in finding the right look for the characters personalities but I feel I could have found more option or alternatives to their costumes. I accomplished what I set out to do in todays lesson plan.

Costume Design Valerie

Valerie, like Sonny is one of the more offensive characters, she may not be violent but she has a threatening look. To best describe a stereotype she would fit in to would be Punk.

This is Brody Dalle, the lead singer of The Distillers. The way Brody dresses would be the best out fit for Valerie.

As Valeries character is in a school environment, she may not be as revealing, but the style of clothes would be very similar, tight, ripped and leather.

Costume Design Sonny

My idea for Sonny is sport wear, but much more urban looking and slightly chavish looking. I felt this would most suit the his character as he gets angry and likes to fight.

I felt nike would be a good choice of brand.

Costume Design Pier

Piers character is based on an escapie from a POW character.
A good character costume would be Steve Mcqueen from The Great Escape.

Leather Jacket, Boots and cargo trousers. Much like a WW2 Pilot.

Character Costume Kieth

Kieth is a caffeine addict. And quite preppy.

These are three ideas for his costume. These costumes will be slightly hard to get hold of and are also too outlandish so these will be toned down.

The general idea is smart casual, much like a university student from a posh part of England for example Cambridge or Oxford.

Character Costume Vince

This is the first idea of how Vince dresses.

I wanted him to be quite plain and black due to his pessimistic nature.

I'm going to try and find a t shirt with a weird logo, or better something to do with aliens or outer space.

Plain black jeans.

Retro trainers. For an old school american feel, for example new mexico and the UFO conspiracies.

Vince also wears chains and necklaces, all tell a story of a time he was abducted.

Wednesday 13th January - Lesson Plan

It is getting very close to the shooting of the first episode, so in todays lesson I plan, with the help of my group, to finalise important details. Firstly I need to research character costumes and props in preparation for tomorrows shoot. Once I am finished I will talk to my group and ask if they need any help with anything.

Title Desgin

This is my first design for the title. I chose a to use a normal font for 'Detention' to symbolize the boredom suffered during detention. As for the 'Deficit' I want to go with a graffiti style with pastel colors which links to the chalk board effect, as for the graffiti I chose this as the Kids in detention are meant to be rebellious.

I'm not sure I will stick with this, but it will do for now until I either come up with something new or I may try to incorporate the characters. But as I haven't got a cast yet this is hard to do.

Tuesday 12th January Lesson Plan

In this lesson I plan to complete my 1st Title Logo.

Facebook and Twitter Screen Shots

This is an early screen shot of the twitter page. As you can see it doesn't have many friends, comments or tweets. I also feel there are inappropriate words on our page, I don't think it should as this is a college project and this does not look or sound very professional. I will bring this up in a group meeting.

This is the Facebook group, as you can see it is much more popular than the twitter, this may be due to a vast amount more of college students and friends using Facebook as a means of social networking. Because this is a new project and I'm near the start I have not yet made a logo or proper title we have just used a picture of a 'rebel' kid.

The Guild Title

The Guild is an online webisode based on a group of gamers. Like The Inbetweeners this title uses the Characters from the webisode, but with a twist, instead of the real characters it is thier online characters.

Living with the infidels Title

This is a webisode called Living with the Infidels. It was the first webisode I watched so thought it would be a good research. It is based on a group of centers around a bumbling, Bradford-based terror cell. Initially set on a path to martyrdom, Yorkshire's jihadi warriors discover the West isn't as bad as it seems. I really like this title as it very visually interesting especially with the cartoon distortion on the characters. I think that I will first come up with a Title Logo which is visually interesting and promotes our webisode then once all the actors have been chosen for the role I will create a title which includes them as this will give people a better idea of what Detention Deficit is about.

Scrubs Title

Visually this title is very interesting, due to the x ray scan of a torso. It also works well with the theme of the show, Scrubs is based on a Hospital named Sacred Heart in which main character JD works with his friends. It is a very surreal program often drifting into JDs day dreams. By how 'Scubs' is written you can tell that it is a comedy, and not a serious drama therefore people have a preconception of what they'll be watching.

Title Design Research

I am in charge of designing the Title. Firstly I must research other title designs to find what is appropriate or not. I want to find titles that are linked to school based comedies or other comedies about young people.

Firstly, The Inbetweeners is a comedy series about 4 friends, who are undoubtedly all quite 'loserish'. They all met at the school they attend. This is a reason why I chose to research their title. This title is rather simple but effective, it uses all four characters stenciled then the title of the show typed across their bodies. It may not show the personalities or the theme of the show, but it does show what the main characters look like.

Monday 11th Lesson Plan

In todays lesson I plan to research Title Sequences from sitcoms and other comedy related episodes such as other webisodes like The Guild. Once I've finished the research I will then go on to story board the title.

8th January

In todays lesson I was told that I am no longer going to work in a big group but would be split into two smaller groups to make two individual mini-series. When finding out this news I wasn't greatly bothered as I felt the group I would be in would work much better as we share similar ideas and work well together. I also felt this was a good idea as many of the ideas I disliked were ideas of those from the other group so I would be able to make a group decision and decide to get rid of them. The only part that annoyed me slightly was that much of the class had already been told the night before, while some of us found out the day after. Though it annoyed me, I am not totally worried as I believe our group has good ideas and has the ability to do very well with the making and researching of the episodes.

Once we had heard about the group change I sat down and discussed out new roles and what I would plan to do such as research and preparing to make the first episode. I set each other specific things to do over the weekend. My job was to finish the detention deficits logo and title tag. Jame's job was to finish the script. Phillipa was to research music.

8th January Lesson Plan

In todays lesson I plan to come up with a story board for the opening credits and a title/logo for Detention Deficit.

After finding out that the groups were split the new plan is to discuss new roles and prepare for the first episode.

Target Audience

The target audience for my webisode is 15-21 year olds. Appealing to an audience in my age range means that I can appeal to their humor and interests. I tried to appeal to both females and male, but as a mostly male cast and crew boyish humor would come through dominant. Males are also more likely to be browsing YouTube for lengthy periods of time who also visit Facebook a lot. This is the useful as the main fan base is on Facebook.

Target audience character profile:

Male, 17 years old. Has a keen interest in film and current media. Spends time browsing the internet for new videos and other downloads music. His favorite types of music stray from rock to indie, drum and bass. He attends college and lives with his parents. Plays video games to pass time away from homework, when that gets boring he searches online for new and interesting things in the world of video.

6th January

In todays meetings I discussed ways to market our webisodes, write the script and characters. The group was split into Two groups, one Marketing the other Script Writing and titles I was in this one. Firstly I wanted to finalise the character profiles as I need these before I start scripting. I had 6 or 7 different ideas for characters but felt we need to only have 5. In our meeting I gave the class character profiles, though we still weren't completely sure which characters I'd be using.

These are the five characters I've decided on:

keith:
caffiene addict, drinks coffee when ever he can
stressed, quite jumpy
occationally has anxiety attacks with cause him to rash out
talks to much and talks very quickly, hard to make out at times
doesn't have a main character they talk to or disscuss, talks to everyone
sonny doesn't like keith

sonny:
each episode contains a flashback of how sonny got the detention
the detention in the flashback is riciculous
can get agressive at times. very agressive
each episode has a rumour about him. each rumour will be ludicrous
each rumour will have it's own nickname which sonny will react to
sonny doesn't get on will anyone really, but doesn't get on with valerie at all


pier:
known as the great escape guy
draws up crazy schemes to escape detention, he'll always think his idea is better than going through the door

We managed to write a brief outline of ideas about what could happen in the first episode. The first episode would be establishing the 5 regular characters so that the audience know what the webisode is about.
In the meetings before hand weren't going to well as people didn't vote or held back on their opinion till after the meetings, which annoyed me as it stopped me from working effecitvely due to having no input from class members then having to have another meeting as they had complained about decisions I'd made then have an opinion afterward. This was sorted out by saying how each of us felt and then compromised.

An on going arguement/discussion throughout the lesson was thinking for a title. The group came up with two The Regulars and Detention Deficit. When the group voted, I voted detention deficit, there wasn't enough votes on one side or the other. So we came up with a compromise The Detention Deficit, even though I didn't mind this title, I laughed a lot when I realised people voted for a name which people didnt even understand let alone know the meaning of the word deficit. I also realised Detention Deficit is the complete opposite to what the show is about as deficit is a lack of, so a lack of detention, whereas the people in the show are constantly in detention, this seems slightly odd, but this was soon saved as I was told it was IRONIC.

There are plenty of ways of exibiting work. It can range from exhibiting work in a positive way for example art shows, comic books or cinema, to less positive for example graffiti art as it is illegal but is still a great way for people to see your work. The most common way of exhibiting your work or other peoples work is TV, radio, film, music, newspapers, posters, theatre.

One practitioner in particular which I have studied in depth is Jeffrey Lewis. Jeffrey lewis started off playing music as a good way to make people aware of his comic books, in 1998 and 1999 he started playing shows and drawing fliers to advertise the shows he would make these tiny comic books that were the show fliers and he felt like the shows were advertising the fliers rather than the fliers advertising the shows. Jeffrey went through experimental stages such as reciting movies on top of music, playing along with 4 tape players as back-up, he also played with many band members over his time before comfirming a band. The main change in change in Lewis's popularity was in a show when he decided to present one of the songs in illustrated form, this was a first "lo-budget video" in 2001, and it worked so well that he kept making them and it became a regular feature of his shows even when the shows became a little less experimental. A lot of his songs that became his most popular illustrated songs were not very popular in normal song form, like Champion Jim or the story of the Red Hand or the Creeping Brain, they were songs that he might have performed once or twice and then abandoned. But because he decided to try to illustrate them, they really came alive in a new way and work much better with drawings than without. These may not be a step forward in technology, some could say even a step back, but these changes have helped Jeffrey take a step to success.

Another Practitioner named James Cameron is a Director and has exibited his work in an interesting way. He is the director for the long awaited 'Avatar', it was 12 years in the making, the reason being is he felt the technology then wasn't capable to produce his vision. After seeing Lord of the Rings decided it was time to kickstart his project. Even if it was not on purpose this was a clever idea as fans became intruiged as to why it wasn't made yet. The technology Cameron waited for was 3D involving a 3D projector and glasses specially made to see the image in 3D. Cameron wanted his movie to be the best, this maybe the reason why it is the most exspensive movie ever made, which could be one of the multiple reasons why you would go to see it as it is an important moment in film history.

6th January Lesson Plan

In todays meeting I will discuss ways to market our webisodes, ideas for writing the script and an idea of character profiles. This would be best if the group was split up in to two groups, one marketing and the other script and character profiling. I am a part of the script writing team so I already know which group I will be in, I hope to come up with the rest of the group to have a basic outline of what could happen in the first episode.

Todays lesson

Today was a sorting of roles and positions. Firstly I elected chairs who would run the meetings held, who would take charge of votes for example. The way I did this was got the group to electe people and then voted to see who got the most. Finally Alex and Tim were chosen. I believe this took far too long to decide. On the other hand these roles are important as they help a flow of creativity but keep it in order, but I feel there are people who wouldn't contribute then complaints were made when others became passionate about ideas.

Secondly I discussed ideas for the webisodes. The way I did it was wrote ideas on a postick note then discussed the ideas. I came up with several different ideas but in the end it was decided that James and Haydens idea would work the best. The idea was that the webisode are based in a detention room, 5 students (regulars) are always there. Theres conflict between the people in the room and incorporates flashbacks.

Jobs were elected to each member of the group, then there was a either a positive reaction or negative based on how well people felt you were suited. I chose the job of writer because I have some creative ideas which can be worked into the script. I will be working with Alex, Hayden and James, these are ideal working partners as all of us have bold ideas and are willing to join forces to create bigger and bolder work.

Towards the end people were accused of shouting over people and not letting people join in the conversation. Whereas I feel this is unfair to say as a minority of people were purposely silent and almost sometimes putting down ideas due to personal feelings no matter how good the idea was. I believe that if you want to get the best ideas there has to be a flow of conversation as peoples ideas spark from other peoples ideas. If we all sat listening to one person then listening to another in would get painfully boring and an ineffective use of time.

Tuesday 5th January Plan

In todays lesson I plan to sort roles and positions. At first I will need to decide on a Chairs Person who will run meetings, keep order in the class and who will take charge of votes. Once a Chair Person is decided I will then commence with a meeting in which we will start to come up with ideas for the webisode. A third necessity which I need to fulfill is allocating roles such as director to cameraman, etc. If I manage to complete more tasks this would be a good start to the project.

Living with the infidels

Living with the infidels is about a bumbling, Bradford-based terror cell. Initially set on a path to martyrdom, the Yorkshire's jihadi warriors find the West isn't as bad as it seems. Tempted by the likes of Man U, cable TV and the beautiful Abi who lives upstairs.

I really like this webisode series, I think that it is a very bold and brave series. Taking a very big problem that faces the world now in our current day and age and creates a funny series of how the west may not be as bad as the east think.
